Key Services

UHK has a 24 hour Acute Stroke pathway with rapid on-site CT scanning and stroke thrombolysis, coupled with an immediate pathway to Cork for thrombectomy in appropriate cases. A 4 bedded Acute Stroke Unit was opened in 2018 which provides specialist acute stroke care from a highly trained multi-professional team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists. This team also provides an early supported discharge service for appropriate patients who may benefit from early return to their home environment. The team is led by a Consultant Geriatrician who specialises in Acute Stroke and who is supported by a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
