Emergency Department Nursing

The Emergency Department at UHK is a 24/7service and offers nurses the opportunity to work as part of an energetic, progressive, dynamic innovative multi-disciplinary team. Nursing roles within the department are focused on the delivery of high quality care to a range of life threatening and non-life threatening emergencies. The team possess a sense of humility and understanding when responding to the challenges that present on a day to day basis and are cohesive in their approach.

Education is paramount within the department, with all members of the nursing team offered, supported and encouraged to avail of educational supports and opportunities, to achieve their individual and collective potential. The vast experience and knowledge amongst our team facilitates care provision that is relevant, up to date and evidence based which is consistently focused on the patient, their families and the unique needs they require.

Medical Nursing

Working within the medical directorate is an exciting opportunity to advance your skills within acute medicine across a wide range of areas including cardiology, oncology, dialysis, care of the elderly, rheumatology, diabetes stroke and rehab care. We have a dynamic team of nurses who provide excellent standards of nursing care and strive for positive patient experiences at all times. We promote and foster an atmosphere of advancement and greatly encourage education within nursing.

Paediatric Nursing

The Children’s Ward at UHK is a 24/7 service and has an inpatient capacity of 29 beds. The team on Cashel Ward care for children aged 0-16 years, under the care of Paediatrics, Surgery, Orthopaedics and ENT. We are proud to be affiliated with CHI, Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght, as a Shared Care Hospital.

We continuously strive to promote and provide high-quality; child-centred, research based health care to the highest standards using the resources available to us. Family centred care is paramount in our practice. We act as an advocate for the child and their family by building trusting relationships to alleviate fear and provide compassionate, competent holistic care. Commitment to professional and personal development for all nursing staff is core to our values. Perioperative Directorate in UHK

The directorate focuses on the surgical patient pathway from outpatient attendance through to discharge. Our core principles are based on the delivery of a safe, personal, clinically effective and high quality service to all patients. We are committed to striving to maintain high standards of care.  Perioperative directorate in UHK includes the following areas ; a general surgical ward , an Orthopaedic ward , a day ward , OPD- including infusion unit , pre -assessment and interventional radiology   and an Endoscopy. 

As part of a teaching hospital we are committed to professional and personal development for all nursing staff.  We have a newly appointed surgical clinical facilitator to provide added support.    The professional development of staff is an integral part of the support provided within the surgical directorate . All new staff members attend the hospital orientation programme.  A ward based orientation programme is given to all new staff. 

The perioperative service will be expanding in particular in the general surgical ward and Endoscopy unit with the introduction of new consultants to UHK in the near future.  As such we will have vacancies arising within the directorate.
