General Medicine
Dialysis / Nephrology
The Nephrology service at UHK houses the only Dialysis Unit in Kerry and is a satellite unit of the renal department of Cork University Hospital.
Key Services
The Dailysis Unit cares for adults with end stage renal failure and currently provides haemodialysis as a replacement therapy to more than 50 patients. Most patients dialyse 3 times weekly for 3.5 to 4 hours daily. The unit is staffed by a team of highly skilled specialist nurses led by experienced Clinical Nurse Managers, with daily medical cover provided by a Renal Registrar.
Consultant Nephrologists visit from Cork on Tuesday and Wednesday each week and work closely with a Clinical Nurse Specialist as well as the Dialysis Unit team. They hold renal clinics, including pre- and post-transplant clinics in the hospital each morning and visit the unit in the afternoons. Where suitable, the team at UHK prepares patients for renal transplantation at the national centre. The Consultant Nephrologists also provide advice and support for inpatients admitted under other UHK teams.
