Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the area of medicine concerned with the normal functioning and disorders of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, liver, colon and rectum. The team at UHK provides outpatient, inpatient and day case procedural services for Gastroenterology patients.

Key Services

The consultant-led Gastroenterology service provides high quality services to prevent, diagnose and treat gastroenterology conditions. There are weekly gastroenterology and hepatology outpatient clinics with referreals accepted from GPs and UHK consultants.

The team provides an inpatient consultation service to patients admitted under other clinical teams and works closely with the General Surgeons, dieticians, stoma nurse and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical Nurse Specialist to provide a clinical care for a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions.

Diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy services are provided in a JAG-accredited endoscopy unit at UHK by skilled endoscopists. Links with specialist centres in Cork and nationwide allow for timely onwards referral of patients for subspecialist care.
