Patholgy

The pathology laboratory provides a wide range of laboratory examinations including scientific and clinical advisory services to help in the diagnosis of illnesses and the monitoring of the treatment of those illnesses. Laboratory results are made available to patients through their clinicians or GP’s. There are five departments, supported by Central Specimen Reception and the pathology office.

These departments carry out a wide range of examinations (tests) varying from simple to complex and report results in a timely manner to assist clinicians in management of their patients Primary Sample Collection Manual.

 

Opening Times

Routine Laboratory Service: 8am – 8pm Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays)

Emergency out-of-hours service: 8pm – 8am Monday – Friday.

Also 24 hour out of hours emergency service is provided on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Location

The Pathology Laboratory of University Hospital Kerry is situated on the first floor of the main hospital building. Samples may be delivered to the Central Specimen Reception at the entrance to the Pathology department. Phlebotomy department is located on the ground floor of main hospital building, adjacent to out-patient clinic area.

 

Quality

Clinical chemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) are accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) to undertake testing as detailed in the scope of tests listed on INAB website (Registration Number 197MT) in compliance with International Standard ISO 15189 and the EU blood Directive 2002/98/EC. A defined scope is available through the INAB website www.inab.ie.

As part of its commitment to total quality, the Laboratory, at UHK participates in the external quality assurance schemes run by the Irish External Quality Assessment Scheme (IEQAS), the United Kingdom National External Quality Assessment Scheme  (UKNEQAS) and Finnish National External Quality Assessment Scheme  (Labquality) and Welsh External Quality Assurance system (RIQAS). Molecular Diagnostics also participate in QCMD Gastro Parasitology EQA scheme. Results of these external quality assessments are available on request.

The goal of the Pathology department in UHK is to ensure that our users receive accurate, reliable, meaningful and timely laboratory results. To facilitate this objective, it is necessary to receive feedback from users of the service. We in Pathology department at UHK want to give you the best possible service. But there may be times when you think we could do better. Sometimes you may even want to tell us about something we have done well.
